Robert Arthur Gilbert, 84, who worked as an Environmental Project Manager at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Bethesda from 1973 to 1988, died of cancer July 9 at his home in Olney. Dr. Gilbert was a native of the Chicago, Illinois area. He graduated from Wabash College in 1945 and attended graduate school at Ohio State University, where he received his PhD in Chemistry. Following graduate school, he worked at the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio before moving to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1956 to work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories doing research involving chemistry and thermodynamics. In 1973, Bob and his wife Pat moved to Bethesda, where he began his work at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. After retirement, the couple moved back to Crawfordsville Indiana, where they attended Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church and were active in church and community activities. Bob served as Class Agent for his graduating class at Wabash and was awarded the Myron Phillips Award for his work. In 1996, Bob and Mary returned to Olney, Maryland to be closer to their children. His wife, Mary Patrick Gilbert, whom he married in 1946, died July 9, 2005. Bob is survived by four daughters, Gail Sherman, Mary Sue Treat, Roberta Kogok, and Rebecca Groves all of Montgomery County, Maryland. In addition to four daughters, Bob is survived by his brother-in-law Ernest Patrick and sister-in-law Ruth Rogers, both of Crawfordsville, He is further survived by three sons-in-law Ned Treat, Bob Kogok and Dave Groves of Montgomery County, Maryland; three grandsons Robert Sherman of Birmingham, Alabama, Brian Treat of Irving, Texas and Joe Sherman of Seattle, Washington as well as nine granddaughters: Jean Bascom, Laura Treat, Ellen Bjerkas, Stephanie Willet, Christina Groves, Caroline Treat, Evelyn Groves, Abigail Groves, and Julia Groves, all of Montgomery County Maryland. Bob also had three great-granddaughters Taylor, Katie and Nora Bjerkas. Note: Dr. Gilbert served for a time as class agent.
